What is sleep apnea?
Sleep apnea is a medical condition that causes periodic interruptions in sleep due to lack of air supply to the brain. With sleep apnea, a person stops breathing in their sleep, starving the body of oxygen. This results in gasps for air and jolts that may wake the person up. This may happen several times during the night and the individual may not remember it at all the next morning. People who suffer from sleep apnea may snore loudly, often disturbing their partner’s sleep and keeping them from peaceful rest. Some might not even be aware that they have sleep apnea and can dismiss it as just a mild form of snoring. Many people also tend to be fatigued and irritable during the day since they aren’t getting a full night’s rest.
