What causes a canker sore?

What causes a canker sore?Your dental health is important because it can impact your overall well-being. When you have any dental problems, it can cause pain and discomfort, which will affect your quality of life. One of the ways you can ensure proper dental health is by visiting a dentist's clinic for regular checkups. For instance, when you come to our clinic, our dentist will have an opportune time to examine the state of your oral health and determine whether you have any underlying problems.

Canker sores are a common problem that our experts detect when performing regular dental checkups. These are sores that will form on the inside of your mouth. They can be painful and will cause you some level of mental torture, and it is important to find immediate treatment. Our dentists usually consider the following factors as contributors to you developing a canker sore.

Overzealous Brushing

If you brush too roughly, you can hurt the inner tissues of your mouth, therefore causing you to develop a canker sore. You can injury the gums and the inner side of your cheeks. Our dentist recommends that you use an appropriately sized toothbrush, and reduce the force applied when brushing. This is important in avoiding injury to the mouth tissues.

Injury in sports or from an accidental bite

Injury to your inner tissues is a major cause of canker sores. You can bite yourself accidentally or get a blow when playing.

Food sensitivity

Some foods can cause you to develop canker sores or worsen your condition. These include foods such as strawberries, tomatoes, citrus fruits, chocolate, acidic and spicy foods.

When to see a dentist

There are minor sores that can go after a week on their own. However, if they become too painful, and cause you not to eat properly you should come to our dentist's office. We are always ready to offer assistance to our patients for optimal living.
