Our teeth see use every day. Teeth allow us to speak properly, and to communicate beyond words. Through our smiles, we can communicate emotions and messages without having to say a word. Finally, our teeth allow us to eat and enjoy meals to the fullest. Due to all this use and wear, our teeth may not be in the best shape they can be. One of the reasons why teeth need treatment is because of cleaning, yes, but in a great part because of the foods we tend to eat.
The Foods That Are Bad for Teeth
The largest culprit for damaging teeth is sugar. This sweet substance is irresistible, but is awful for our teeth and enamel. Bacteria love sugar, and anytime we eat something sweet without brushing, it is a safe haven buffet for those microscopic organisms. Harmful bacteria then produce plaque which can become tartar, and that can be a rather inconvenient procedure. Sugar, unfortunately, is inside in so many American staples. Our drinks are rich in it, our desserts, as well. Avoiding these foods will improve health greatly, both for your teeth, and general health.
Acidic foods like oranges and pickles and oranges have high acidity, which wears off the enamel and the minerals in them. While coffee and wine do not necessarily wear down the structure of the teeth, they certainly do stain them.
There are a lot of foods that are not good or easy on the teeth, but all the same, moderation is key. Properly brushing your teeth goes a long way, but avoiding many of these foods in excess only aids more. To recap, the largest culprit is sugar. Simply avoiding sugar can greatly improve oral health.
