You Should Not Ignore an Impacted Tooth

You Should Not Ignore an Impacted ToothAn impacted tooth should not be overlooked. This type of tooth usually is a wisdom tooth that has not emerged. It becomes embedded in the soft tissue or bone because the jaw stops developing or because of a blockage, usually by another tooth.

Why You Should Treat an Impacted Tooth

In most cases, impacted teeth are the wisdom teeth, or third adult molars, that develop last. They usually are fully formed by the time a person is 17 to 21 years old. If they become impacted, they typically are removed, as they can cause gum infections and problems with soreness and pain. Even if the teeth were able to come in, they can keep clean and crowd the other teeth. Therefore, usually, it is best to remove them.

Impacted Teeth Besides Wisdom Teeth

If an impacted tooth is another tooth, such as a canine, it normally is directed through orthodontics to finally come in. This tooth may become impacted because another tooth is blocking it. If this approach does not work, it will be removed and replaced with an implant.

Symptoms of Impacted Teeth

Impacted teeth can produce a number of symptoms that, after a time, can become disruptive. These symptoms include red, swollen, bleeding gums, bad breath, difficulty opening the mouth, or a bad taste in the mouth. You can also experience pain when chewing or biting. Therefore, you cannot ignore this type of dental issue. Symptoms may come and go over time. However, they usually do not resolve themselves or get better. That is why any kind of tooth impacted needs to be examined and treated.
